Many men have a slight bend in their erect penis, and most of the time it is completely normal. A bend is only a concern if it is new, getting worse, painful, or makes sex difficult. This page explains the two main causes and how they are treated.

Is a curved penis normal?
A mild curve in any direction is common and does not need treatment if it causes no pain and does not affect sex. It is worth seeing a specialist if:
- the bend is new or has changed;
- erections are painful, or you can feel a lump in the penis;
- the curve makes penetration difficult or uncomfortable for you or your partner;
- the curve is causing you significant worry.
The two main causes
Peyronie’s disease (acquired curvature)
Scar tissue forms inside the penis and causes a bend that was not there before. It often comes with pain, a lump, an indentation or loss of length. It usually develops in men over 40, but it can occur at any adult age.

Congenital penile curvature
Here the curve has been present since puberty, because the two sides of the penis have developed unevenly. There is no scar tissue, no lump and usually no pain. It is often noticed in younger men.
